What a private Epernay tour is
It is a vehicle and a guide for your party alone. Nobody else joins, and the route runs
at your pace. You are collected where you are staying, or you meet at the tourist
office.
There are two kinds. Aÿ-Champagne Experience sells private half days with growers, priced
per person with two travellers minimum. The jeep and the Impériale bus are one fare for the
vehicle, for up to 3 and up to 15.
The half days run 3 hours 30 minutes, in the morning or the afternoon. The jeep takes 2
hours 30 and the bus 2 to 3. None of them lists lunch.
Why choose a private tour
Your guide drives, and pours
On the half days a guide-chauffeur takes you to the villages and leads each tasting. You
set the pace, and every question at the table is yours.
You are collected, not met
Aÿ-Champagne Experience collects you within 6 km of Epernay. The jeep comes to any address
you give and brings you back to it.
You taste the region's spirits too
Both half days end with ratafia, fine and marc, the Champagne region's own aperitif and
spirits. Of the shared tours, only the Bubble tour by the same producer pours all three,
and the e-bike day a ratafia.
A group pays one fare
The Impériale bus takes up to 15 people for $1,521: a birthday, a team or two families.
Nobody else is on board.
Private tours vs the small-group afternoons
The alternative is a seat on a shared tour from the tourist office, eight people at most.
The closest match is the Bubble tour, run by the same producer as the private half days.
| Private half day | Shared Bubble tour | Shared afternoon with lunch |

| What you pay | $298 to $333 per person, two minimum | $189 per person | $257 per person |

For a couple, a private half day costs about $597 against
$378 for two seats on the Bubble tour. You pay the difference
for the pickup, the pace and the guide's full attention.
What you get, and what you don't
- The Must-sees: half an hour at the abbey church in Hautvillers, an hour and
a half in the village and its vineyards, an hour in Aÿ and half an hour in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ.
Three champagnes, then the spirits.
- The Connoisseurs: the same village, then an hour and a half with a family
grower in Oger. Six champagnes, then the spirits.
- The jeep: 2 hours 15 in the vineyards and one bottle, opened at a vantage
point.
- The Impériale bus: three sabered bottles, soft drinks, a driver and a
hostess. It visits no cellar.
- Not included: lunch, tips and bottles you buy.
Three champagnes, Aÿ and the abbey church
The Must-sees is the shorter pour: Hautvillers, an hour in Aÿ and half an hour in Mareuil, with your own guide-chauffeur.

Planning a private tour
- Budget: $298 or $333 per person for the half days, two
minimum. $229 for the jeep and $1,521 for the bus, whoever rides.
- Pick morning or afternoon: the half days run both. An afternoon slot
leaves the morning for Moët & Chandon's cellars, which open at 9:30 daily.
- Give your address: pickup is within 6 km of Epernay on the half days.
Outside that, meet at the tourist office or the station.
- Refunds: every private tour here refunds in full if you cancel 24 hours
before it starts.
The guide to what each Epernay champagne fare buys shows why a private fare costs what it does.
Who should choose something else
- If you are travelling alone. The half days need two travellers. A seat on
the shared afternoon with lunch is priced for one.
- If you want lunch in the fare. None of the private tours lists it. The
shared afternoon and the e-bike day do.
- If your budget is tight. The vintage van takes you to Aÿ and
Hautvillers for $57 per person.
- If you are staying in Paris. The Epernay tours from Paris collect you at your hotel,
though in a shared van.
Frequently asked questions
Do private tours need a minimum?
Aÿ-Champagne Experience's private half days are priced per person with a two-person minimum. The jeep and the Impériale bus are one fare per vehicle, for up to 3 and up to 15.
What does a private half day cost for two?
Twice the per-person fare: $597 for the Must-sees and $667 for the Connoisseurs. The jeep costs $229 whether one, two or three of you ride.
Can I book a private tour on my own?
Not the private half days, which need two travellers on the booking. The jeep takes one to three for a single fare. A seat on the shared afternoon from the tourist office is priced for one.
Where do the private tours collect you?
Aÿ-Champagne Experience collects you within 6 km of Epernay, or meets you at the tourist office or the station, in the morning or the afternoon. The jeep comes to any address you give. The Impériale bus boards opposite the tourist office.
What are ratafia, fine and marc?
They are the Champagne region's own aperitif and spirits. Aÿ-Champagne Experience pours them after the champagnes on its private half days and the Bubble tour.
How much is the jeep tour?
It is $229 per jeep for up to three people, not per person. The ride lasts 2 hours 30 minutes, with pickup where you choose and a bottle of champagne opened in the vines.
What is the Impériale bus?
An open-top double-decker hired whole for up to 15 people, for 2 or 3 hours through the vineyards with three sabered bottles. It passes the houses without stopping, and the fare is $1,521 for the group.
Can I cancel a booking?
Every tour refunds in full if you cancel at least 24 hours before it starts, except the Moët & Chandon day on foot, which is non-refundable. Each card states its own policy.
